I have heard about some dumb people, but seriously (and I think you can agree) these two take the cake.
Read that article... *shakes head*
In short, two girls (14 and 10) were "urban caving" (exploring drains - thats just its sexy name) in Adelaide and managed to get themselves stuck, and instead of calling 000 or their parents, they updated their Facebook status...
I can imagine what it read:
"LIKE OMG!!! We are totalllllllllllly stuck in a drain! lol - come rescue us?! Lovve ya! x"
...idiots...
Extract from article
But officials stressed the Facebook isn't their preferred method of people calling for help. (HOLY SHIT REALLY!?)
And yes, I guess some of you may argue that:
1. At least they were rescued
2. That was ingenious
3. It was clever of them to utilise Facebook in that way
If this is you, then you too are an idiot.
One of the very first things that my parents taught me to do (obviously when I was old enough to understand it) was to ring 000 in an emergency...and I would like to think that parents/teachers still do so.
If this is the influence that these social networking sites are having on people, than I say ban them.
On Triple M yesterday morning, the presenters interviewed a school principle about his newly introduced "No Phone Policy" and the positive effects that it is having on his students. Straight away I thought this wasn't anything special, as my high school had the same policy (when I was there). My sister, who now also goes to the same school, enlightened me to the fact that it is now a normal thing for people to be on their phones during class.
I began to think about why, now, this is happening when it wasn't happening when I was there.
On the topic of phones, I started to think about the phones that I have had, and realised that in 2004 when I was in grade 10 (like my sister) I would have had a Nokia 3100, a phone barely able to load Google let alone Facebook.
Therein lies the problem, with phones such as the iPhone now available for free on plans as low as $49 a month and parents moving towards putting their kids on plans (rather than prepay) to keep track of their spending, kids as young as 14 are now getting the type of phone that I would have never dreamed of owning at that age.
But I think thats where technology is heading, its cheaper and more widely available, I mean shit you can get an iPhone 3G in America for $99!.
I digress, the point I am trying to make is that when I was at school phones like the iPhone just didn't exist (or did but I would have had to have sold my soul to own one) and now that they are available at such a relatively cheap price kids at school have access to sites like Facebook 24/7, whereas we didn't...we did have access to awesome games such as Snake II.
I should also add, that by no means whatsoever am I saying that this freedom to access their friends/Internet/news e.t.c is a bad thing, quite the opposite, I think that having access to news and current events (even facebook) it is more of an opportunity and a benefit to the current generation to expand our horizons and self educate ourselves, there is however an appropriate time and place for this.
I hope that made sense.
Something else I recently realised, is that no matter how hard I try there is always going to be one university/college (depending on your geographical location) subject, per semester, that is going to fuck me over.
I just hope that hard work and persistence can lead me to victory over the malevolence that is 'project management'.
It's always the same, the subject that seems the easiest is always the most complicated and difficult.
It's kind of like picking up a really hot girl on a Saturday night, getting back to her place, having a massive make out/feel session, getting a gnarly blowjob...then finding out she has a penis... amazing to start out with, but when you get down to the gnitty gritty...not so fantastic...
In good news, my copy of Mac OS X Snow Leopard came today =D so I am looking forward to playing with that tonight! (and your mum)
Also this evening, I am going to a “business meeting” of the sorts, to discuss plans for a new YouTube show (hosted by myself and one of my mates), which I am greatly looking forward to. (watch out communitychannel – #1 Most Subscribed – Australia here we come) :P
(I finished Batman btw – awesome game)
And I watched a few more videos on COD 4 Modern Warefare 2 – EPIC)
Anywhozle,
Au revoir chienne
